How do we determine sample size in quantitative dissertations?
Quantitative dissertations deal with numerical data. Here, you assess and analyse numerical values using statistical techniques to get the results. However, before collecting data, it is important that you set an accurate sample size as it directly links with the reliability of your results. If you need help with dissertation sample size, follow these steps:
Know and understand the population, the entire group from which you will be selecting your sample.
Set a confidence level. It is a % value that determines how sure you want to be about your research results. A 95% confidence level is the most common.
Choose the margin of error. It reflects the difference between your interpreted results and the actual value in the population. Most researchers go for + 5 or + 3.
If the population size is small, use it in the calculation. If it is too large, assume it is infinite.
Now, calculate your sample size using the formula:
n= z^2.p.n (1-p)/ e^2
If the sample size comes out too large, lower the confidence level or increase the margin of error.
If it is too small, increase the sample size for accurate results.
